Gothic is both a theme and attitude that pervades society to this day. Gothic theme furniture is an example of this as is its continued popularity.

This is a theme that all of us have seen at the movie theaters. In those really scary movies where some ghost is haunting the old mansion where no one in their right mind would ever spend the night, the furnishing are usually going to be a good example of Gothic Theme Furniture. The theme actually has a long and storied history, and was not designed in Hollywood as a set decoration for B grade horror movies.

Cowboy Bedding Sets

The Gothic period began around 1150, and was the first break from the classical themes of Rome and Greece that had been the benchmark for Western Culture for thousands of years. This time has been called the middle Ages, and also the Dark Ages, and it was marked by a large gap between the rich and the poor. Furniture for the poor was makeshift and functional, and furniture for the rich was classical. At this time, however, a unique and definitely non-classical theme was emerging. It began, as did many things at this time, in the Church. From the beginning, it consisted of heavily carved and ornately decorated motifs.

As the theme moved from the Church to the homes of an emerging middle class of merchants, and minor nobles, it retained much of the religious themes that marked the early Church connection. Other motifs were heraldic symbols like griffins, lions, and hawks. Floral themes were popular and the royal Fleur-de-lis was also used often. The name Gothic referred to the barbarians of the north, the Goths, and was first applied to the theme as an uncomplimentary reference to its break from the classic themes of the past. Many of the emerging middle class, especially the minor nobles, were very mobile during this period. They were forced to move from home to home, and Castle to Castle, following their lord, or going to war. This led to the introduction of chests and cabinets that could be easily loaded and transported. The armoire for clothes storage and the buffet for the storage of eating utensils made their debuts during this period. Tables with drawers were also introduced during this period.

Bedroom furniture consisted of large four poster beds with elaborate backboards and posts. The carvings were often of Gargoyles and other mythical creatures that served to scare away evil spirits, and were borrowed from the churches where the theme began. Other accessories associated with religious themes served as further decoration. These included stained glass windows, and ornate candelabras.

The theme gave way to the Renaissance period, and because of the enlightened thinking of the period, it fell into disfavor. It was the beginning of the idea of separating the religious and the secular, and Gothic was too religious for the taste of the emerging free thinking classes of the time. In 1840, in the United States and Great Britain, the theme had a revival. It became popular during the Victorian period, and a large number of items were produced that were very identical to the original pieces. As in the past, oak was the most popular material used, although other woods were sometimes used as well. Most of the antique pieces found today date from this period as an original piece from the medieval period would be very rare and valuable. In addition to it popularity in those old films, the theme is having a bit of a second revival today with reproduction Gothic pieces becoming more available. They are used as accessories most often, although some homes are being decorated in the theme complete with the gloomy light of stained glass windows. If it does nothing else, it will certainly please any stray ghosts that might be lingering about the home.

A Sugar and Spice Tea Party

A Victorian nursery rhyme says "Sugar and Spice and everything nice, that's what little girls are made of." Hosting a Sugar and Spice Tea Party is a great way to have a lot of fun while pretending to be grown up. Children can help with preparation activities such as like preparing finger sandwiches, decorating cookies, to arranging flowers as place markers at the table. Guests can be invited to bring dress up clothes or vintage style hats or, alternatively the hostess can furnish a selection of dress up items (look at your local Goodwill for some great items at little cost).

The dressed up ladies may enjoy participating in a treasure hunt. The hostess hides a jewelry box full of old fashioned costume jewelry (brooches, necklaces, bracelets, etc.) - the perfect fashion accessories for the dress up game. Then, provide riddles or poems to help the children figure out where the items are hid. Each clue takes them to another, and to another, and so on. For example, a starting clue could be something like: "Welcome ladies, a treasure you will find, if you follow all the clues that I have left behind. Ring! Ring! Hello? If you need to find the phone, where would you go?" Of course the guests will head straight to the nearest phone where another clue tag hangs waiting for them. Other clue hiding locations could be in plants, under chairs, behind pictures, in the garden, anywhere inside or outside that you can think of. Make the clues easy enough the guests can find them quickly and have enough clues to run around having fun. Finally, have them find the jewelry box and then they can all put on jeweled accessories to go with their hats and dresses! Or, alternatively, you can have various plastic gems, trims, and other shiny decorative items in the jewelry box and then have basic wood cutouts with jewelry pins attached on the back of them. The guests can design their own jeweled treasures by gluing stones, trims, laces, and other shiny items onto the wooden shape cutouts. Each guest then has a great keepsake of the Sugar and Spice Tea Party afternoon. Once they have their proper accessories, it is time for the fashion show. Put on some music, create a run way and watch them model their fashions. Taking digital pictures will allow you to send each of the young ladies home with pictures of their modeling debut.

One last game that is fun and easy to set up is a tea cup relay. Divide the guests into two teams. Put a tea cup on a table behind each team of guests. Give each guest their own sugar cube to hold. Then, give one team member a tea spoon (the smaller it is the harder!). Each member will place their sugar cube on the tea spoon and run the relay race track without touching the sugar cube with their hands (if it falls off, they can use their hands to pick it back up). Then, when they get back to the beginning, they drop their cub into their team's teacup and pass the spoon to the next member in line. First team that gets all their cubes in their teacup wins.

Finish the Sugar and Spice afternoon off with a sit down tea party complete with cups, saucers, fresh flowers, and some sugar and spice cookie treats. This party will be one each of the guests remember for a long time. Enjoy!

How To Prevent Bed Bugs Infesting Your Baby's Crib

The very idea of creepy crawlies infesting in your baby's crib is enough to make any parent shudder with horror. The idea of blood sucking insects creeping onto your sleeping baby, biting their tender skin and feeding on their blood is just about unbearable. You probably think it could never happen to you. After all, you keep your home clean and your baby's clothing and bedding is always spotless. What many people don't realize is that cleanliness is not enough to defend you and your family against bed bug infestation.

Once they hit our shores, they move around effortlessly by hiding in luggage or clinging to clothing. Their small size and the fact that they are nocturnal make the creatures hard to detect. These pests can also walk a fair distance. So, you could easily be next on the visiting list if the people living in the apartment next door bring an unwanted guest back from their vacation.

You might have read news items about a bed bug pandemic threatening the United States. These warnings should be taken seriously. The reports are not exaggeration. The bed bug population has been multiplying at an alarming rate over the past decade. The situation is now becoming critical.

If your little one wakes up in the morning with nasty itchy bites that weren't there the night before, remember the warnings about the growing bed bug problem. Don't assume the bites came from a mosquito or an animal flea. Check the crib for the signs that bed bugs are present.

You probably won't see any bugs during daylight hours when they hide away. But you might find small smears of blood excreted by the bugs. You might even spot the tiny shed skins discarded by the young growing insects.

A bed bug infestation in your baby's room is a horrible thing to contemplate. But, as parents, we have to anticipate these dangers and be ready to deal with them to keep our children safe. Preventing a bad situation is always better than trying to deal with it after it has developed. This is as true of insect infestations as it is of any other unpleasant problem. You won't want to use strong chemicals or have insect poisons around with a baby in the house. So it makes sense to try to prevent an infestation, or detect it at an early stage.

Using a special bed bug proof crib mattress encasement is a good first line of defense. This will at least ensure that the pests do not start breeding inside the mattress even if they get into your home.

Some people suggest smearing the legs of the crib with petroleum jelly (Vaseline). This is supposed to prevent the bugs climbing up onto the crib from the floor. But there is some doubt as to how well this method works. It is also undeniably very messy. If you want to try to isolate the crib, a better method would be to use bed bug interceptors.
